My Birth Plan

******Update***** There have been some requests for some new icons. They've been added at the bottom, above the 'food' related graphics. To those that requested the new icons, June is a busy month for my family and I so I am very sorry it took so long. I hope you check back and get the ones you were asking for. :)

I was recently asked by a lot of people where I got the template for this birth plan I put together for our as not yet even decided for, third baby. Can you say that I am a planner? As a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) I had to do a lot of research and in my journey, I discovered a lot about the science that influences how a birth is handled, the studies behind it, and the recommendations by ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists). I realized that the evidence suggests things in L&D be handled a LOT differently than they actually are. Which prompted me to create this. Because I am asked about it so much, I decided to post my FIRST ever blog on the topic, with the graphics I made for said birth plan, so others can use it too! Hope you enjoy.

(This means that instead of continuous electronic fetal monitoring, which studies show have a 99% false positive rate, you have someone come in and listen to your baby, by hand, for a certain amount of time per hour. Usually about 15 minutes every hour using a fetoscope or hand held doppler)

Like the one above this means only some monitoring of your baby every hour, but unlike the one above, this one still uses the electronic fetal monitoring.

(This particular picture means only 1 cervical exam every 3 hours.)

(this is another form of monitoring for your baby while you labor, however this unit is usually wireless.)

These next few are obviously for a cesarean, but the above can still be used for a cesarean birth plan as well.

And finally, at the request of some of my birthy friends, some food preferences.

These are the icons that I have created. If you have any requests for anything specific, feel free to contact me and I can put new ones together.

To put the plan together, I used Powerpoint. I am sure you can use Microsoft Office, but I used powerpoint because it's actually really easy to use. Here's the tutorial for how to change the colors. :)

Step one. Open up  the power point program. Chose the tab at the top that says "Insert".

Step Two.  Chose the option titled "Picture"

Step Three. Once you chose the option Picture, this will open up your computer's inventory of photos. Chose the one you want to insert.

I chose informed consent for this example simply because Informed Consent is very important and often neglected.
Step Four, you should now be looking at something similar to this. Select the option titled 'Recolor'. I have it circled in red.

Chose your color. and it will change color.

Then, to resize, select the little tiny dot at the corner of the picture.

And move the dot. it makes it bigger or smaller.
Repeat with each picture.

    1. I have created this icon. I hope it's what you were looking for and needing. If there are any others that you need, please let me know! Thanks for reading!

  3. I'm also looking for a way to say that if Mommy is unable to do skin to skin, to make sure the baby is given to daddy for immediate skin to skin.

    1. I added one that says "Baby With Parent At All Times". Your desire that the baby stay with the daddy if the mommy is unable, is a very good one, however its a little hard to word in a phrase short enough to fit on a sticky. I hope this helps, but in the meantime, I am looking for a way to get that wish across in a way that is worded better! Thanks for reading.

  10. Thank you for all the icons, very useful! :) Can you make one icon for in case I need a c-section, asking to always have a support person in the OR with me (in case my husband leaves to stay with the baby, I want my doula or mom to take his place in the OR)?

Also, the icon "pitocin only when necessary" is misspelled :)

    thank you!

  16. Trying to download the icons to the powerpoint but having difficulty. Do you have a way to download everything, or I have to do it individually? Thank you so much in advance, have been searching for a birth plan to use and yours is perfect.

    1. As far as I know you would need to save each icon you want individually. I'll see if I can figure out how to turn them into one download though for the blog for future references. I'm newer at this so it may take me so tinkering. ;)

I would love one for Hypnobirthing and Allow parents to discover/announce sex please.

  29. Hi also a hypnobirthing mama here, so more gentle wording for some of these would be fantastic. i.e surge or wave instead of contraction, and release instead of rupture.
Could you also add one for no sweeping of membranes and natural physiological 3rd stage.

  40. This is definitely the most complete list I've seen so far, but it was still missing a few that I wanted (as seems the case for a few others as well). As OP seems to have taken a bit of a break from this, I got to playing around with and customizing some of my own using her blank template and the font she listed. I started off making a few just for myself, but here's the list of customized ones I've created from the requests I've seen on this thread (for fun!). If it isn't too forward of me, I can send some (or all) of these via email to those who would like them.

    SPD (Symphisis Pubis Dysfunction)
    Do Not Announce Dilation
    Celiac/Gluten Allergy
    Hypno Birth
Epidural Wanted (modified for a non Csec delivery)
    Gas Please (laughing gas)
Limited Cervical Checks (modified to not show 1/3h)
    Please No Distractions (tv/music/noise)
    Do Not Announce Gender
    Mommy Announce Gender
    Parent Announce Gender
    Partner Announce Gender
Natural Placenta Delivery (modified from "Wait For Placenta To Deliver Naturally". Less words)
    No Vacuum
    Do Not Bank Cord Blood
    No Bottles
    No Formula
    Oral Vitamin K
